Judges for the Short Story Writing Competition

Pen Avenue Malawi is pleased to announce the names of the judges for the Short Story Writing Competition it hosted for University and College Students in Malawi.

The following are the judges:

Beaton Galafa

He is a Malawian writer and blogger. He blogs here. He currently works as a tutor at the African Languages and Linguistics Department at the University of Malawi.

Beaton writes both fiction and non-fiction. He is the winner of the 2016 Free Expression Institution's Young People for Democracy Essay Writing Competition.

In 2014, he was one of the two Malawians who attended the prestigious Commonwealth Creative Non-Fiction Writing Workshop in Kampala, Uganda.

His short story, Bullet in the wind, made it into the top 10 of the 2014 Dede Kamkondo Short Story Writing Competition.


Dave Mankhokwe Namusanya 

He writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry. His works have been published in local newspapers and are a part of the current Junior Secondary School Literature in English Syllabus.

In 2015, Dave was third in an essay competition organised by the World Bank in Malawi. In 2014, he attended the Commonwealth Non-fiction Creative Writing Workshop in Kampala, Uganda.

His first attempt at a novel, Nightmares for Dreams, got an honourable mention in the Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) - Peer Gynt Writing Competition in 2013.

In 2012, Dave was third in the African Liberty Essay Writing Competition for African University Students.

He once worked as an editor for Arts and Entertainment (editing Short Stories and Poems) for newspaper publication at Times Group Limited. He also worked as a consultant editor for CLAIM publications on the current Junior Secondary School syllabus.

Amos A. Nsabwe 

He is a playwright and literary critic.


He graduated from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College with a Bachelors Degree in Arts Humanities with a bias in Literature and Script writing in 2013.

He has contributed scripts for radio plays in some radio stations locally.

Currently, he is working with Blantyre Newspaper Limited.
